While the calibre and heritage of Epiphone's discontinued, USA-made John Lennon Casino can hardly be questioned, it had one major drawback: the price!

This tale isn't unique among Epiphone's American-made guitars. One event more than any other led to the Casino's enduring popularity.

It's argued that McCartney's use of the model was the more impressive from a musical perspective, but Lennon definitely did more for it visually than any guitarist before or since.

Contemporary players such as Paul Weller and Noel Gallagher have also become synonymous with Epiphone semis but, as we know, their inspiration draws directly from The Beatles and The Rolling Stones.

Here, Epiphone has borrowed Gibson Custom's Historic 'Inspired By' moniker as a means to upgrade the standard Casino with USA appointments, but retain that famous artist relation at a modest price - perhaps due to the fact that Epiphone has, as mentioned, discontinued the USA-built equivalent.

The upgraded fittings include two Gibson USA P pickups with dog-ear, nickel-plated covers and a Switchcraft-made three-way toggle switch and output jack.

Like the ES, the Casino's maple laminate body is completely hollow and shares the distinctive twin-cutaway shape with single-layer, off-white binding on the front and back edges, which in this case is extremely well done.

The 'Inspired By' also features a more vintage-correct sunburst than its Chinese counterpart, where the 'burst is wider to the edges and has a more luxurious, deeper gradient as seen on sixties examples.

However its scratchplate, as on our regular Casino, is still a little cheap looking and it's common for players to remove it.

In keeping with the original, the fret neck joins the body at the 16th fret, which is three further back than a centre-blocked ES and one further than our Chinese-made standard Casino.

We also see the inclusion of parallelogram-shaped block inlays placed neatly into the rosewood fretboard, as seen on original Casinos of that period.

In my Epiphone Casino review, I also looked at the playability of this instrument to see how well it performs. The neck of this guitar is very comfortable.

It has a cutaway so you can access the higher frets. It is still quite capable of playing lead guitar but it is more suited for rhythm guitar styles especially the advanced chord playing that comes with jazz.

Beginner players might struggle a little bit playing lead guitar on this instrument especially at the higher registers simply because of the design of the instrument.

You will need a little bit of experience with guitars to get the most out of playing this Epiphone. There is a decent set of hardware that comes with this guitar including two P90 Classic pickups in the bridge and neck position which are exceptional pickups and sound great for a wide variety of styles.

You also get to volume, two tone controls, and a toggle switch for those controls to change the sound of your pickups on the Fly.

You get a Tune-o-Matic bridge which helps stabilize the tuning of this instrument and there is also a Trapeze style tailpiece which will find on many traditional jazz guitars.

This helps keep the guitar in tune while you are playing and it makes for easy string changing. Extras on this instrument include a simple Epiphone logo across the headstock as well as the Epiphone symbol on the truss rod cover which give this guitar and attractive look.

It is well suited for many different styles of music but it is not as well-rounded as some other instruments such as a traditional Les Paul.

The F-hole design means that this guitar produces both acoustic as well as electric sounds so if you are looking for that sort of sound this is the guitar for you.

If you are an intermediate or an advanced player, this guitar will be more than adequate for meeting your requirements. The wood used to produce this guitar is not quite as good as some other instruments for the style but it is quite decent.

There is an Epiphone logo across the headstock as well as one on the truss rod cover for an attractive look. The guitar comes in five attractive colors Including cherry, sunburst, turquoise, natural, and metallic gold top.

The colors are very attractive and help this instrument stand out. You can still play lead guitar on this instrument, but the range is not as good as other guitars.

You can change the action at the bridge or by using the truss rod to set it the right way for your preferences. Make sure you also intimated the instrument so that it will stay in tune all the way up and down in the neck.

I like both of the acoustic and the electric sounds that are produced by the F-holes and this really helps enhance the sound of the instrument and make chords and complicated Rhythm lines boom out through your amplifier.

It has the fully hollow body design of the original Casino but fits it into a smaller ES body which is ideal for a number of reasons.

Perhaps one of the big differences between the Coupe and the larger Casino is where the body meets the neck. On the original model, this is at the 16th fret while on the Coupe the neck and body meet at the 19th fret.

This means you have easier access to the upper part of the guitar which can be a godsend for learners and those who want to move on from the beginning to a more intermediate level of playing.

Overall we really like the size of the Epiphone Casino Coupe. It is all very well the Coupe being the smaller version but if it comes at the expense of a great sound then the size difference will hardly be worth it.

The two Ps on the Casino Coupe are ideal for playing a variety of sounds so you can range from rock, Jazz, funk all the way to blues.

It also offers more resistance to feedback which is mainly down to its smaller size and you get a lot of resonance with this model too.

You do have to hear it to believe it because the Coupe provides a great sound and performance for a wide variety of music styles. Does it offer the same sound like the original Casino?

Comfort is often at the top of the list for buying a new guitar and the compact nature of the Epiphone Casino Coupe makes it a very comfortable guitar to use.

The actual manufacture of the guitar is very good too. We found the overall look and feel of the guitar to be of a very high standard.

The LockTone Tune-o-Matic bridge is fully adjustable. It allows you to adjust string height and the overall intonation. In fact, the LockTone Tune-o-Matic bridge is actually set to play well straight out of the box and this guitar holds its tune adequately.

Epiphone is well known for providing high quality and durable guitars and there is no reason why the Casino Coupe is any different.

Luckily the Coupe has durability written all over it. This compact version of the original Epiphone Casino has a ton of great features and these are the main plus points of this electric guitar:.

Even though the Casino Coupe is definitely up there with some of the best guitars around especially for the price, not everything is rosy and there are a few downsides to tell you about.

This is an electric guitar that we have looked at in the pas t and the Les Paul is fairly close to the same size as the Casino Coupe. It is one of the more iconic guitars out there given the artists that have used it in the past.
